How to check your EPF balance
EPFO (the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation) gives four official ways to see your PF balance: a missed call, an SMS, the member passbook website and the UMANG app. The quick ones (missed call and SMS) need no internet. All of them need an activated UAN (your Universal Account Number) and the mobile number registered with it.
Steps
- Check what you need. Your UAN must be activated. EPFO's member portal says activating a UAN is now done through the UMANG app (with Aadhaar face authentication). For the missed call, EPFO also needs at least one of these linked to your UAN: your bank account number, Aadhaar or PAN.
- Missed call. From your registered mobile, call 9966044425. The call disconnects by itself after two rings and costs nothing. EPFO then sends the details of your last contribution and your PF balance.
-
Or SMS. From your registered mobile, send
EPFOHO UANto 7738299899, written exactly as EPFO shows it. The reply is in English by default. For another language, add its first three letters at the end, for exampleEPFOHO UAN HINfor Hindi. EPFO lists Hindi (HIN), Punjabi (PUN), Gujarati (GUJ), Marathi (MAR), Kannada (KAN), Telugu (TEL), Tamil (TAM), Malayalam (MAL) and Bengali (BEN). -
Or the member passbook, for the full history. Type
passbook.epfindia.gov.ininto your browser yourself and check the address ends in epfindia.gov.in. Sign in with your UAN and password (the one you set when you activated the UAN), then follow the on-screen options to open the passbook of your PF account. - Or the UMANG app. UMANG is the Government of India's app for many services; its EPFO section says you can check your PF balance there. Install UMANG only from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, open EPFO, and use its passbook service. The app's menu names can change, so follow what it shows.
If something goes wrong
- No reply to the missed call or SMS: make sure you used the mobile number registered with your UAN, and that your UAN is activated. For the missed call, at least one of bank account, Aadhaar or PAN must be linked to the UAN.
- Your details look wrong: EPFO's sample SMS reply says to contact your employer to provide or edit details, so start there.
- Still stuck? The passbook site lists EPFO's toll-free helpdesk, 1800118005, and the member portal lists the EPFO helpdesk 14470.
Stay safe
- EPFO's own warning: never respond to any call asking for personal details like Aadhaar, PAN, bank details or an OTP, or asking for a payment. EPFO never calls members to deposit any amount.
- Never share an OTP or your password with anyone.
- Use only the official sites, ending in epfindia.gov.in or epfo.gov.in. Lookalike sites copy their look, so check the address.
