How to convert a Word document to PDF
Word can make a PDF by itself, so you don't need to upload your document to a converter website. In Word for Windows, save a copy and choose PDF as the file type. In Word for the web, use Print and Save as PDF.
Steps in Word on Windows
- Open the document you want to convert.
- Choose Save a Copy. Select File, then Save a Copy. (For a document you have never saved, use Save As or Save a Copy.)
- Pick the folder where you want the PDF.
- Set the file type. In the file type drop-down, select PDF.
- Select Save.
For more control, select More Options, then Options. Microsoft lists choices such as the page range, including tracked changes, bookmarks from headings, accessibility tags and password protection.
Steps in Word for the web
- Select File, then Print.
- Under Printer, select Save as PDF, then select Save.
- Name the file, choose a location, and select Save.
Microsoft says this makes a basic PDF that keeps the layout. For more control, such as bookmarks, use Open in Desktop App from the Editing menu and convert there.
If something goes wrong
- PDF is not in the file type list or the menu looks different. Menus differ between Word versions. Check Microsoft's help for your version.
- Layout looks different. Open the PDF and check page breaks before you send it.
Stay safe
- Free online "Word to PDF" sites receive your whole document. For anything with personal or financial details (bank statements, ID, contracts), use Word itself.
- If you add a password in the options, keep it somewhere safe. A forgotten password can't be recovered by Pocko.
- Lookalike sites copy the official look, so check the address before you type anything.
Pocko is not part of Microsoft and this guide is not official. Menus differ a little between Word versions; if a step looks different, check Microsoft's own help.
