How to take a screenshot on Windows 11
Windows 11 has the Snipping Tool built in. The quickest way in is the keyboard shortcut Win + Shift + S, which opens a bar to choose what to capture. Pressing PrtSc takes the whole screen.
Steps
- Open the capture bar. Press Win + Shift + S. (Or select Start, search "snipping tool" and open it, then select New.)
- Choose a mode. In Snipping Mode, pick Rectangle, Window, Full screen or Freeform. Full screen captures immediately; for the others, drag or click the area you want.
- Copy it. Press Ctrl + C to copy the snip so you can paste it into an email or document.
- Save it. Microsoft says snips are saved automatically to your Screenshots folder. Use the Save as button for an extra copy elsewhere. To change the folder, select See More, then Settings.
Other ways
- Whole screen with one key. PrtSc captures a static image of your entire screen and copies it to the clipboard.
- Delay. In the Snipping Tool, select Delay and pick a time such as 5 seconds, choose your mode, then select New to start the countdown. This helps with menus that close when you click away.
- Screen recording. Press Win + Shift + R (or select Record, then New), choose the area, select Start, and Stop when done.
If something goes wrong
- Nothing happens on Win+Shift+S. Open the Snipping Tool from Start instead, and check Microsoft's help for the shortcut settings on your PC.
- Can't find the file. Look in the Screenshots folder, or check the Snipping Tool's settings for the folder it uses.
- Some features such as Perfect Screenshot and Color picker need a Copilot+ PC, per Microsoft.
Stay safe
- Check a screenshot before you share it: it can show names, account numbers, OTPs or messages in the corner of your screen.
- Don't send screenshots of OTPs, card numbers or Aadhaar to anyone who asks.
- Lookalike sites copy the official look, so check the address before you type anything.
